Cash Game Poker 101

You’re ready to hit the world of cash game poker armed with a stack of bills and confidence in your poker ability. That’s great, but just to give that bankroll a little protection, here are some things you should consider before you start your cash game poker adventure.

Table/Seat Selection

Sometimes, especially in live cash game poker, you won’t have a choice about which table or seat to take. Just in case, however, you should sweat some of the tables before you sit down and watch the action to see which table is most conducive to your style of play.
If you find one, make every effort to sit in that game. You should also think about which seat you want. There are no “lucky” seats, of course, but in no limit games, you tend to want looser players on your right and tighter ones on your left. You’ll have position on the guys who like to spew chips, so you can let them bet into you when you have a great hand.
When they fold, you can bluff more safely knowing that the players behind you are less likely to play back at you without a real hand.

Patient Play

In a tournament, you can’t afford to wait around for something good to happen. The blinds are rising and you need to move with them, even if this means departing from your usual poker strategy.
In cash games, it’s all about patience. Some of the best cash game players are known as “grinders,” because they’re willing to “grind it out,” day after day, folding hand after hand until they get the perfect, most profitable situations.

Choosing Stakes

You’ll want to start with stakes that are big enough to keep you interested in playing your best poker game, but not so big that they will wipe out your bankroll with one bad run of cards.
This can be a delicate balance. Err on the side of protecting your bankroll. If you pick a game that is easy to beat, you’ll be able to move up in stakes soon enough.
