This is the time of year where I usually ramp up my poker coaching a bit. It is about 2 months away from the start of WSOP events at the Rio in Vegas and it is a great time to tune up your poker game. Much like hitters and pitchers are working through spring training prior to the baseball season, poker players can easily benefit from a lesson or two before going and playing WSOP events. Especially if much of your poker playing is spent in cash ring games, tuning up for the long grueling tournaments in Vegas is a good idea.
Obviously, strategy is different for tournament play, we all know that. But, for the long World Series events it is necessary to make even more adjustments. Most players head to Vegas with a strategy of dominating the event they are playing, but I suggest to players that a more laid back approach is the way to start out. It helps keep the nerves down, and particularly in NL events, keeps you from trying to win it all in the first hour, and potentially busting out early.
I also remind players that it is necessary to plan to take care of yourself, eat differently, exercise, etc during these events. Many times you might play an event that starts at Noon and doesn’t finish until 12:30 or 1am: and that’s just the first day! The Main Event is even more of a marathon and adjusting how you take care of yourself can go a long way to staying in the right frame of mind and making the right decisions at the poker table.
This time of year, I offer a couple of WSOP Primer coaching packages for right around $100. When you stop to consider the massive amounts of prize money that are at stake over 56 WSOP events, that little investment to tune up your game might just be the smartest move you ever made.
