Today’s post if a follow up to a question from an online player who asked how to handle being “card dead” and also “situation dead” Yesterday we addressed “card dead” and today’s post will deal with being “situation dead” I understand card dead, and I also understand being situation dead, but of the two, I have a little problem with the notion of being situation dead. Very seldom are you truly situation dead, as you will see in the next few paragraphs.
First, the idea of being situation dead stems from being card dead. In other words, not only do you not have any decent cards to play, you also cannot find any situation where you can get in and steal blinds or pick up a pot regardless of what your cards are. There are times when this is the case, but they are few and far between and they usually don’t last long. In all actuality, you are probably just not looking for the right spots to get into a hand, pick up an easy pot pre-flop or on the flop, and get out.
The only time you might really, truly, be situation dead is in the latter stages of a multi table tournament, you are short stacked (but no desperately so) and you are surrounded with big-stacked, aggressive players. In these instances, you will find it very hard to get into a hand and “buy” the pot, or intimidate your way through it, when you just cant get any cards. If you try anything fancy, the big stacks will simply raise you all-in regardless of their holdings. This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it really sucks, because there is not much you can do expect to ride it out.
However, usually their exists some situations where you can force your will on the entire table, if for no other reason than that you have been card poor and not playing many hands. I am not talking about when you are on the button. That is an obvious play and will many times result in the re-raise and you will be in trouble. I am talking about more subtle plays. For example, you have not caught a hand in 15-20 hands. You are in the small blind with T-2 off suit and everyone folds. You complete and the BB calls. The Flop comes 9-5-2. Take a stab here. Odds are he didn’t hit either. Plus, you are out of position and no one expects you to play with a short stack out of position.
If you are playing against anyone with a brain at all, they will figure you have a hand or you could not bet out of position with nothing. They have to have the goods to call you in this case and if they don’t, they wont. You will not find many players with balls enough to re-raise you all in with no hand in this scenario.
